What is the convergence?

The Housing Justice Convergence's aim is to unite tenant unions, developers of alternatives, policy experts, funders and housing advocacy groups to amplify grassroots perspectives and catalyze nationwide collaboration around Canada's housing crisis.

The battle for framing the housing crisis, its causes and solutions, is heating up. How the problems and solutions are defined will have profound impacts for decades to come, with low-income and marginalized populations disproportionately living with the results.

The intention of the Housing Justice Convergence is to empower housing activists to validate and build power for their policy demands, and clarify the stakes for policymakers ahead of the federal election. In addition to enabling folks working on the ground with practical tools (such as how to work with media and how to finance housing projects) and showcasing tenant union wins from across the country.  Through these efforts, we aim to foster a collaborative event that drives impactful action and long-term solutions for the housing crisis.

(FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions

The Housing Justice Convergence is focused on bringing together underrepresented voices from coast to coast. While the primary language of the conference is English, we recognize and respect the linguistic diversity of participants, especially in Montreal. To support linguistic accessibility, we are seeking volunteers to provide whisper translation during the eight feature panels for those who would benefit from it. Additionally, all speakers and participants will have language indicators on their name tags to help facilitate networking and coalition-building throughout the conference. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide whisper translation during participatory sessions. However, we are prioritizing bilingual facilitators for the participatory sessions to help reduce language barriers and ensure inclusive discussions. If you have any questions or have additional accessibility needs, please reach out to us at housing@solidarityeconomy.ca

  • Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th of the Housing Justice Convergence will be taking place on the 9th floor of the John Molson School of Business. This floor is wheelchair accessible from the first floor, by elevators located beside the security desk. Sunday, March 9th will be taking place off-site at Co-op Bar Milton Parc, which is ground floor accessible. If you have any other access needs or concerns, please contact the Program Coordinator, programs@solidarityeconomy.ca.
  • Montreal features a strong network of public and private transit. The STM includes both the public metro (underground train) and public buses, and costs $3.75 per trip. For the weekend, we suggest purchasing the 10-trip ticket which costs $3.33 per-trip cost instead of $3.75.

  • Tickets for the STM may be bought at any metro or train station.

  • Getting to the Conference Centre:
The Conference Centre is located at 1450 Rue Guy, H4H 0A1, in the heart of the city’s downtown. The centre has direct underground access to the Guy-Concordia metro station (green line), as well as access to many bus lines (e.g., 150, 166, 24, 427).

  • Getting to Co-op Bar Milton Parc:
Co-op BMP is located at 3714 Parc Ave, H2X 2J1, in the Milton Parc neighbourhood. The closest metro station is Place des Arts (green line), with an additional walk time of 15 minutes. If you would like advice or suggestions on how to get around during your time in the city, please contact the Program Coordinator, programs@solidarityeconomy.ca

A Discord server will be open throughout the convergence to make announcements and promote communication between participants. The link to the server will be sent along with participants’ welcome email a week before the conference begins. When logging on for the first time, participants will be asked to select their regional and sectoral identifiers which will give them access to specific channels.

Audio and visual content (i.e., video, photographs, radio broadcasts, etc.) will be recorded for the duration of the convergence. Upon arrival, participants will be given either a blue or orange lanyard, depending on whether they are willing to appear in promotional or other audio/visual recordings. An orange lanyard signals that the participant does not wish to be captured by the media.

Volunteers will be available on-site for general child supervision throughout the convergence. Please indicate your child supervision needs by contacting the Program Coordinator, programs@solidarityeconomy.ca.
